On the occasion of the visit to Brussels of a Delegation of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, No Peace Without Justice and the Nonviolent Radical Party Transnational and Transparty held a roundtable discussion in their headquarters at Rue du Pépin 54, on “Prospects of Iraq-EU Relations”. Speakers included the Hon Sadiq Al Rikabi, Senior Political Advisor to the Iraqi Prime Minister, and Hon Safia Al Souhail, member of the Iraqi National Assembly.

The meeting provided an opportunity for a discussion between the Iraqi delegation and international NGOs representatives on the prospects of Iraq-EU relations in terms of promotion of human rights, rule of law and justice, civic and democratic culture. Participants highlighted the current challenges faced by Iraq in its ongoing process of democratic institution-building and in particular the need to create a strong and vibrant civil society movement that could legitimately interact with the institutions on the definition of the political priorities. The role of the recently appoined UN Special Rapporteur for truth, justice, reparation and non-recurrencePablo De Greiff, was mentioned. Iraqi memebers said that no specific dialogue has been undertaken with him.
